The Truth About Soy Wax: Flaws, Fixes, and Keeping Your Candles Fresh

The Truth About Soy Wax: Flaws, Fixes, and Keeping Your Candles Fresh

🕯️Soy wax: it’s the clean girl of the candle world. Natural, non-toxic, burns longer… all that good stuff. But let’s be real, it’s not perfect. If you’ve ever noticed frosting on your candles, a weird white cast, or a scent that fades faster than your motivation on a Monday, you’re not alone.

That’s just soy wax being soy wax. And while it’s still one of the best choices for eco-friendly candles, it comes with its own little quirks. But don’t worry, I’ve got you! Let’s talk about the common flaws and, more importantly, how to keep your candle looking, smelling, and burning beautifully.

The Flaws: What’s Up With Soy Wax?

1. Frosting (Not the Yummy Kind)

Ever seen that white, chalky layer on your candle? That’s called frosting, and it happens when the natural soy wax tries to return to its original form. It doesn’t affect how your candle burns, but it can mess with the aesthetic.

2. Sweating (Again, Not the Good Kind)

If your candle looks like it’s crying little droplets of oil, that’s just the fragrance separating from the wax, usually because of heat changes.

3. Color Changes Over Time

Natural wax means natural reactions. Over time, your candle’s color might shift, especially if it’s exposed to sunlight or heat. It’s like a slow tan, but for your wax.

4. Scent Fade

Soy wax doesn’t hold fragrance as aggressively as paraffin does. If your candle has been sitting for too long, the scent might start to weaken.

The Fix: How to Keep Your Candle Happy

1. Keep It Cool & Dark

Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Heat and light can speed up frosting and make colors fade faster.

2. Avoid Extreme Temperature Changes

Sudden shifts in temperature can cause sweating and frosting, so don’t leave your candle in a hot car or right next to your AC unit. Treat it like chocolate: cool, but not too cold.

3. Keep It Covered

If you’re not using your candle, pop the lid back on or cover it to lock in the scent and prevent dust from ruining the vibe.

4. Burn It Right

The first burn is crucial! Let the wax melt all the way to the edges before blowing it out to avoid tunneling. And always trim & dip your wick! Nobody likes a smoky, sooty mess.

What About Molded Candles?

If you’ve got one of our funky shaped candles, extra care is key.

• Dust them off gently with a soft brush or cloth (no harsh rubbing).

• Keep them in a stable temp zone: no direct sunlight, no moisture.

• If frosting happens, a quick rub with a soft cloth can sometimes reduce it.

• To refresh the scent, gently warm the candle for a few seconds with a hairdryer (from a distance!).

Soy wax may be a little high-maintenance, but it’s worth it for a clean, sustainable burn. Show your candles a little love, and they’ll keep your space smelling (and looking) fabulous.
